Recent Reads: Comic Books!
Hello my lovelies! Typically, when you think of comic books, vision of Batman and Spiderman spring to mind, and having not played a prominent part in my childhood, I feel that I'm making up for lost time! This time of year I like to pick out a book or two to get totally lost in, because nothing spells summer like lounging outside in the warmth with a good book in one hand and a crisp drink in the other. However, as I'm busy interning this year with my free time dwindling, I find that comic books act as a nice light read during these mild summer months.
If you've ever been in a comic book store before, you'll understand how I was practically drowning in choice. But then I saw them, glistening in the back of the store begging to be bought - the absolute awesomeness that is Adventure Time and Bee and Puppycat. Adventure Time follows the antics and adventures (funnily enough) of a boy and his best friend, who just so happens to be a talking dog. Originating as a kids television programme on Cartoon Network, Adventure Time is one of those miraculous shows that after watching just one episode, you can feel your mood instantly elevated.
And then there's Bee and Puppycat, in what started off as a web series soon developed a cult following. Bee personifies the typical woman in her twenties; who is habitually fired from unfulfilling jobs, unsure of her life's purpose - that is until Puppycat comes along. Illustrated primarily in pastel tones, Bee and Puppycat is beautiful to read and watch and you can't help but fall in love with Puppycat's dry humour.
Both of these shows hold very similar themes, they're colourful, quirky and have got the most lovable characters imaginable. So, if you don't mind embracing your inner child, these comics should be right up your street! I love nothing more than flicking through the pages first thing in the morning and having a good chuckle along with my cornflakes. Luckily for me (as I've already binged on all episodes of both shows), the comic books detail new and exclusive storylines that manage to sate my appetite.
